Have you seen the TikTok videos, IG reels and other social media influencers that have been sharing the food hack of storing avocados in water? These tips show people storing whole and halved avocados in water to keep them fresh longer. It has been all over social media. In reality, it could be making you sick. The FDA has come out and spoken against this method of storing avocados.
FDA and Storing Avocados in Water
"The FDA does not recommend this practice," a spokesperson told Newsweek. "The main concern is with the possibility that any residual human pathogens (i.e., Listeria monocytogens, Salmonella spp, etc.) that may be residing on the avocado surface may potentially multiply during the storage when submerged in water.
"In addition, research performed by FDA scientists has shown that Listeria monocytogens has the potential to infiltrate and internalize into the pulp of avocados when submerged in refrigerated dump tanks within 15 days during refrigerated storage, "they added. "In this case, even surface disinfecting the avocado skin prior to slicing would not be able to remove the contamination." As stated on Newsweek.com by Kate Fowler on 05/20/2022.
Safe Way to Store Avocados
Are you curious if there is a safe way to store avocados to enjoy their freshness?
The Cross Legacy has been in publications worldwide with her food tips; nine publications on avocados alone. Click here to see our article posted in The U.S. Sun.
In a previous blog, and in my Amazon Best Seller I Bought It, Now What? I talk about how to wash and properly store avocados. Before storing your avocados with lemons in the crisper drawer, place them in a bowl. Cover with cool water. Add ¼ c vinegar and soak for 2 minutes. Set a timer. Rinse and air dry.
To keep half an avocado fresh, store in a mason jar with an airtight lid preferably with skin on. A pint-sized, wide-mouth mason jar works best for storing the remaining half. This will keep your half avocado fresh for up to a week. These tips will help you safely store whole and halved avocados.
**Accidental Pro Tip:**
I have always stored my avocados in a drawer next to my lemons. It turns out that they help each other last longer. I won’t get into the science behind this here, but unlike lemons, apples and bananas do not mix well with avocados. They speed up the ripening process. If you don’t need to ripen your avocados, don’t store them next to these fruits. If you would like to know more of the science behind this, look up ethylene gas and how it affects fruit.
Keeping Food Safe
As food prices continue to rise, it is more important than ever to be able to eat everything you buy. Storing your food safely is more than half the battle. If you can store avocados until you are ready to eat them, or next Taco Tuesday, or your next avocado toast, then you won! Eating half today and half tomorrow is another win.
Take a look at my blog. I teach safe food storage hacks. Your food will last longer, and you have time to eat it! It saves you from running to the grocery store for that one avocado that turns into a bag or two of groceries if you are not careful. Saving you time and money all while keeping your food safe for storage.
Conclusion
The FDA has come out and recommended to avoid storing avocados in water. Storing avocados can still be a challenge, but with The Cross Legacy way of storing, you will get that extra time to eat a fresh avocado.
