Does Storing Fruit in Glass Jars Make It Last Longer?

Yes! I have always washed my fruit but once I started putting it in glass it lasted even longer than it did in a plastic container. It doesn’t have to be a jar; it can also be a glass container in another shape.

How Do I Have Less Food Waste?

By making sure that you are washing and storing your fruits and vegetables correctly, you will reduce your food waste. They should be able to last three weeks or longer, so you will have plenty of time to eat them before they go bad. I only grocery shop once every three weeks and can teach you how to do that in my grocery course.

Is Washing Fruit With Water Enough?

No, water alone will not remove harmful pathogens or mold spores that cause fruit to go bad faster.

What Type of Vinegar Do I Use for Washing Berries?

You will be using 5% distilled white vinegar for washing fruits and vegetables. In Canada this is often called white vinegar.

What Does Washing Fruit in Vinegar Do?

5% Distilled White Vinegar kills harmful pathogens and mold spores that can be on your fruit from growing, handling, or transport. Many food borne pathogens cause illness. By washing your fruit in vinegar, you are removing those pathogens. Additionally, washing fruit helps it to last longer once it is in your home if you store it properly.

Do You Wash Your Berries in Baking Soda?

No, I only wash my berries in a vinegar and water mixture.

Does Storing Fruit in Mason Jars Make It Last Longer?

Yes! Storing fruits and vegetables in a glass container that is airtight, like a mason jar, is how to keep berries fresh longer. They need to be washed before putting them in the jars.

Should I Wash Organic Berries?

Yes. There is still the potential for mold spores or pathogens to be on organic produce from transport or the grocery store. Washing fruit, even if it is organic, will make it safer for your family and help it to last longer in the fridge. It is also how to keep berries fresh longer.

What Is Apeel? Do You Buy Fruits With Apeel?

Apeel is something being added to produce to make it last longer. Right now, I am not buying items with Apeel until there is more research on it. You can see where it is being sold near you on this site. My washing and storage methods allow me to keep produce fresh for three weeks or longer, so I will continue to do that. Can I store Fresh Berries in Glass Jars With Plastic Lids?

Yes! Glass jars with plastic lids are fine for storing your fresh berries. I use a gallon size jar for strawberries since I buy them 2 lbs. at a time and a wide mouth quart size for other smaller berries.

Do Glass Jars Need to Have Metal Lids?

Metal lids make jars more airtight so I recommend them for items like avocados and onions. Berries can be in glass jars with plastic lids, these are some of my favorites for larger quantities of berries.

Can I Store My Fresh Berries Together?

No. Each berry lasts a different amount of time so I recommend storing them separately so that you can enjoy each one while it is fresh. I talk more about this in this blog.

How Long Do Fresh Berries Last in Jars in the Fridge?

After following my directions, raspberries and blackberries last for 2-3 weeks, strawberries last for 3 weeks, grapes last for 4-6 weeks, blueberries last for 6-8 weeks.

Should I Store My Fruit With a Paper Towel?

Yes, putting a paper towel in the bottom of the container helps to hold excess water. This works for some fruits and vegetables, but not all of them need it. What Happens if There Is Condensation in My Berry Jars?

As long as you follow my directions, a little bit of condensation is okay. You can hear me talk about condensation here.

How Do I Freeze Berries?

You should freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet first so each berry freezes individually. Once they are frozen you can move them into a freezer bag or resealable bag. This should be done after washing them following my strawberry washing instructions.

How Do I Wash Strawberries?

How Long Do Strawberries Last?

When washed with my directions and stored in glass jars, fresh strawberries in a jar will last for three weeks.

Should I Cut My Strawberries Before I Put Them in the Jar?

No, once you cut the berries, they will go bad faster. I recommend storing strawberries whole and then if needed, you can cut them in the third week as you are finishing them up. You can see my full strawberries in a jar directions in this video.

How Do I Wash Raspberries?

Do You Store Raspberries in Mason Jars?

Yes. After washing them using the instructions in my eBook, I Bought It, Now What? I store raspberries in a mason jar. You can watch the full process in this video.

How Do I Wash Grapes?

Grapes are washed in a vinegar and water solution just like the other berries. You can see my full directions in this blog post.

Should I Take Grapes off the Stem Before Storing?

No, leave the grapes in small bunches on the stem. This will help them to last longer. You can learn more in this YouTube video.

How Long Do Blueberries Last?

If you store blueberries in a mason jar after being washed with my directions, blueberries will last for up to six weeks in the fridge.

Do You Store Blueberries in Mason Jars?

Yes. Blueberries will stay fresh in mason jars for up to 8 weeks! Wash them using these directions.
