Making your own dressing at home helps you control the ingredients, reduce food waste, and save money on groceries. This homemade avocado ranch dressing is a great way to use up fresh ingredients while keeping them fresh for as long as possible. Plus, itβs easy to make and packed with nutrients!
How to Keep Ingredients Fresh Longer
Before we dive into the recipe, letβs go over some produce-saving tips for the ingredients used in this dressing.
Avocados
- Store avocados in your crisper drawer with citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and limes. These βproduce buddiesβ help each other stay fresh longer.
- Organic avocados last even longer because they arenβt treated with ethylene, a ripening hormone.
- If you only use half an avocado, store the unused portion in a glass jar with a metal lid in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for about a week.

Cilantro and Parsley
- Store fresh herbs in a jar with filtered water in the fridge. I use filtered water from my Boroux water filtration system.
- Avoid using tap water with chlorine, as it can shorten their lifespan.
- Trim the stems every 10 days to keep the herbs fresh for up to 6 weeks.
- You can learn more about how to keep herbs fresh in this blog.

Green Onions
- Keep green onions in a jar of filtered water on your countertop. You can see how to do that here.
- They can last for months and even regrow when trimmed.
- I typically buy green onions once or twice a year and use my homegrown ones the rest of the time!

Onions & Garlic
- Store onions and garlic together, but keep them away from potatoes, as potatoes cause them to spoil faster. Learn more about potatoes and onions here.
- Once cut, store onions in a glass jar with a metal lid in the fridge, where theyβll stay fresh for about 10 days.
Greek Yogurt & Milk
- Transfer Greek yogurt and cottage cheese into glass jars with metal lids to extend freshness for up to two weeks past the best-by date. Learn more about that in this video.
- I prefer organic A2 milk from Costco, as it lasts up to 6 weeks.
